JM SOLUTIONS: THREE-FOLD APPROACH
1) Behavior Modification
We encourage you to educate yourself regarding wasteful energy habits. Cut energy costs by doing simple things like turning off lights when not needed, opening windows on moderate days so air conditioning isn’t needed, unplugging appliances that aren’t being used to eliminate phantom electrical loads, setting your thermostat back at night a couple degrees, setting the thermostat way back when nobody is home or you are planning a vacation, and taking short but efficient showers! We all can be wasteful at times. Curbing these habits is the first step in reducing energy usage.
2) Energy Efficiency
We strongly recommend that you upgrade to higher efficiency consumer products when the timing is right! What do we mean by the aforementioned comment? We mean use a common sense approach. Purchase high-quality compact fluorescent light bulbs and replace your incandescent lights as they burn out. If you aren’t having repair issues with your current heating and air conditioning system or major appliances, don’t be in a hurry to rush out and purchase “high-efficiency” systems. If you are having issues with your current system and the system is over 10 years old, you may want to consider replacing it with high-efficiency equipment. In Indiana, Geothermal systems as well as air-to-air heat pumps with natural gas back-up heating systems are good choices for comfort heating and cooling. Many of the manufacturers are offering two-stage cooling units now as well with SEER ratings well into the high teens. Always do the math and consider product life cycle in your analysis and make sure your energy efficiency improvements are worth the additional money you will pay for higher efficiency equipment.
