We’re here to help. Local ordinances may come into play with height and noise restrictions for wind turbines and codes banning wood or biomass hot water boiler systems, so make sure you check into these items before you commit yourself to a project. Also, always check with your accountant to make sure you can take advantages of the credits and deductions currently being offered by the federal government.
- The combination of tax credits, ability to utilize bonus depreciation (business), feed in rate tariffs, and electricity inflation of 400% since 1970 all play into the financials behind renewable energy. In addition, some utilities are offering up to $4,000 for solar and wind installations in form of rebates. We can help you sort through these items and even assist in finding financing for your project.
- The products we utilize will always be high quality, and the optimal efficiency we can get. Higher quality usually means higher price tag, but also usually means better warranty and financial stability behind the supplier. We are in the business for the long haul, and know that long term customers are built from offering high quality products, installation, and service.
ON-SITE RENEWABLE ENERGY PLANT
WIND
One of the most noticeable parts of our renewable energy system is the three wind turbines. These Windspire, vertical wind turbines rate at 1.2 kW output at 24 MPH wind speed. As the turbines spin, a generator at the base produces electricity. These turbines are connected directly to our electrical panels in our office. The three electric meters on the wall that faces these units measure the kWh’s that each of these turbines have produced to date.
There are a few things needed for a successful wind power installation. Sustained wind, open area in the direction of prevailing wind, use for the power produced, and good distance from any other obstacles.
SOLAR
Solar panels have a performance guarantee for 25 years and the very first panels installed in the early 1960′s are still working today. Solar panels are a low maintenance option with no moving parts. When they become dirty a simple spray washing will suffice but most of the time rain helps with the upkeep.
There are two solar plants on the Johnson Melloh Solutions site. Our first solar plant is rated at 4.86 kW and includes twenty-seven 180 watt Onyx photovoltaic panels. The installation is a fixed mount and is attached to our billboard sign. We have been very impressed with the performance of these panels. They have way out paced our wind installation. There is a single meter on the back of our building, near the glass doors, that shows the solar production to date.
The second system is a 100-kilowatt solar array, which is one of the largest solar farms in Indianapolis. The demonstration site is part of the company’s initiative to design and build solar arrays in Indiana and market them throughout the U.S.
HYBRID LIGHTING
We have two hybrid parking lot lights. One powered by wind and solar and the other powered by solar alone. Neither one of these two lights are tied to any other power source. They include batteries that have enough reserve capacity for 5 days of use. The lights come on at dusk and go off at dawn. They are perfect for installations that are far from a source of electricity.
