MOORESVILLE

North Madison Elementary School will soon join the ranks of Northwood and Newby elementary schools as the school officials begin a $2 million update project to the building later this year.

Director of Maintenance Jim Patrick presented a preliminary work plan to the Mooresville Consolidated School Board during Tuesday’s meeting.

Among the projects included on the list are replacing existing cabinet unit ventilators with vertical units, replacing boilers with high-efficiency condensing boilers and installing controls throughout the building to regulate temperatures. The plan also includes replacing carpets in classrooms and lighting in the gymnasium, rearranging offices and creating a “single point” secure entrance. Patrick said they will also look at ways to cut down on rest room crowding, including installing new toilets and urinals and moving the sinks in the hall.

“Last spring, we obtained a QZAB loan to do work at North Madison (Elementary School). The loan was for $2 million, but we had to put off the work last summer because of other projects,” Patrick said.

Johnson Melloh, a mechanical contractor based out of Indianapolis, will team up with Sunco Construction of Mooresville, to complete the project.

The total project is estimated to cost $1,965,135, but with added soft costs, including selling bonds and other additional fees, they expect to come in right at the $2 million cap, Patrick said.

Work on the project is set to begin as soon as contracts are finalized, Patrick said. While some of the work will be completed while students are away for spring break, the entire project has an end date of Aug. 1.

“We’ll get into a lot more detail at future meetings, but we hoped to start early and be able to get some things in this year even,” he said.

The board agreed Tuesday to sign a preliminary agreement stating members intend to enter into a contract with Johnson Melloh so the company can begin ordering major equipment and doing engineering work to begin the project…….CLICK HERE TO READ ENTIRE ARTICLE
